Hi friends, welcome back to Amanda's Mindset. I'm your host, amanda Russo, and today I'm diving into a topic that's very challenging and also very important to discuss what to do after being laid off from your job. It's a tough situation, but with the right steps, you can navigate through it. And it's a difficult situation that many of us don't think we will ever be in, but many of us are often in this situation. But many of us are often in this situation. So let's get started. First things first.

Speaker 2

It's essential to allow yourself to feel your emotions, whether it's confusion, overwhelm, stress, sadness, anger, any of those feelings. Give yourself the space to cry or just sit with those feelings and feel them. It is a normal part of the process, and acknowledging your emotions is the first step towards moving forward. Now, acknowledging your emotions does not mean dwelling on your emotions. There's a difference between feeling your emotions and dwelling on the emotions. Feel it, cry. Allow yourself to process this situation. There's a difference between feeling your emotions and dwelling on the emotions Feel it, cry, allow yourself to process this situation.

Speaker 2

Once you've processed your emotions, it's time to get practical. Start by reviewing your budget, and if you don't have one, now is the perfect time to start one. Knowing where your money is going can help you make informed decisions during this transition period. It can help you determine what expenses to keep, what expenses not to keep. Here are some steps. I recommend considering Listing out your expenses. Write down all of your monthly expenses from rent, utilities, groceries, memberships, subscriptions, any and everything that is a recurring monthly cost that you pay. Write it down. Second is identify the difference between essential versus non-essential. Separate your expenses into essential and non-essential categories. This will help you see where you can cut back if needed. This can also help you see where to even cut back temporarily.

Speaker 2

When I first got laid off from my job, there were expenses I had for things that I enjoy using and I know benefit my life and I now have back again. But when I first got laid off, it wasn't a priority, it wasn't an essential expense. I had a meditation app that I was paying monthly for. That was one of the first things I got rid of because I knew that was easy extra money for something that was not essential to me. I was never going to cancel the gym membership, even though these two things could both be looked at as non-essential, which was more of a priority to me non-essential some of those lesser essential items. It will come down to which is more important to you, and there's no right or wrong answer.

Speaker 2

Next, see if you have an emergency fund and determine how long it can support you for, and look into other income sources you might have, whether it's freelance work, part-time gigs, passive income streams it could be something as small as affiliate links any other areas where income is coming in for you or where income could be coming in for you coming in for you. An option that might not come to mind right away is starting your own business or growing a side hustle. I know a lot of people and a lot of you listening to me either have side gigs or are thinking about taking that leap into entrepreneurship. Might be the perfect time to contemplate receiving income elsewhere. Whether it's a passion project or a skill you've wanted to monetize for a while, it's a possibility. I started leaning more into my breathwork business once I was laid off from my paralegal job. Here's a couple tips to help you get started.

Speaker 2

First things first, assess your skills. What are you good at? What skills do you have that could translate into a freelance business or a side hustle? Start writing down all of these different ideas that come to your mind. Second, explore opportunities, whether it's consulting, writing, graphic design, virtual assistance, photography or even digital products. There are so many ways to generate income while you're job searching. Next, take some small steps To generate income While you're job searching. Next, take some small steps. You don't have to go all in right away. Check the waters and see if this is something you want to pursue forward and if entrepreneurship is for you. Lastly, leverage your network, whether that's your network Of Broadcasting community, whether that's your network of podcasting community, whether that's your network of any community that you're involved with. Let your network know if you're offering services or starting something new. You never know who might be interested in working with you or who might know someone who might be interested in working with you or who might know someone who might be interested in working with you. A really great way to network and get yourself out there for any opportunities is word of mouth.

Speaker 2

Now back to the job search. It's time to get your professional documents in order. Update your resume to reflect your most recent experiences and accomplishments, and don't forget to refresh your LinkedIn. Make sure your headshot is up to date. Here are some key tips. Highlight your key achievements. Focus on the skills and accomplishments that are most relevant to the job that you're applying for and accomplishments that are most relevant to the job that you're applying for. And again, network. Reach out to your professional network. Let them know you're looking for new opportunities and ask for any leads, recommendations, suggestions that they may have. With your finances and your professional documents in order, you can now focus on your job search strategy.

Speaker 2

Here are some actionable steps. First of all, you want to set goals and define what kind of job you're looking for. Make sure you set realistic goals based on your education and your experience and what jobs you would actually be fit for. Secondly, research employers. Look into potential employers and see if they align with your vision, your mindset and your career aspirations. Then apply strategically. Tailor your applications to each job, highlighting how your skills and experience make you a perfect fit. You want to update your resume and tweak it ever so slightly for each job to highlight how you are the best fit for that specific job. Lastly, prepare for the interviews. Practice common interview questions and prepare your answers. Confidence is key. They can tell in an interview if you're confident or if you're not.

Speaker 2

Remember being laid off is not the end of your career. It is just a new chapter. Whether you choose to pursue a new job or explore entrepreneurship, taking these practical steps will help you navigate this challenging time and come out stronger on the other side. It's all about shifting your mindset as to how you view this situation. It's either an obstacle or it's an opportunity. It could also be an obstacle and an opportunity. The choice is yours. I hope this helped and I hope you remember that just because you lost your job, it doesn't make you any less spent, it doesn't make you any less qualified, and you will figure this out. You've figured everything else out in your life before, and you will figure this out too.
